T-Day Activities: What to Do and See in Stanstead This Year Townshippers’ Day in Stanstead is only 10 days away! Are you planning to be there? If so, here is your handy ‘to-do’ list for this year’s event. You can also learn more about the day’s activities as they evolve by visiting www.tday.ca. See you in Stanstead on September 17!
Manoir Stanstead (Chapel) Stop by the Manoir Stanstead at 10 a.m. for the T-Day Opening Ceremonies. There will also be entertainment in the Manoir’s Chapel throughout the day, beginning at 11 a.m. and finishing at 4 p.m. More details about the T-Day entertainment schedule will be available in next week’s Keeping in Touch column.
The T-Day silent auction will be set up in the chapel of the Manoir Stanstead as well, and will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Be sure to stop by and see what interesting items are up for grabs!
Pat Burns Arena At the entrance to the Pat Burns arena, visitors will find the Townshippers’ Association kiosk, along with CBC, CJMQ, Desjardins and Stanstead College. On the second floor of the arena, visitors will find the main exhibits area which will include artisans, community groups, heritage groups and more.
In the afternoon, there will even be free skating at the Pat Burns arena! Visitors who bring their skates with them to Stanstead this year can be part of history, by skating in this new, state-of-the-art arena before it officially opens its doors to the public.
Stanstead College For T-Day, Stanstead College will offer 45-minute campus tours (beginning at the Pat Burns Arena), which will include one of Stanstead’s first homes – the Butters House – built in 1866. The tours will start at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Stanstead College’s United Nations Pavillion Before taking a tour of campus, stop by the Stanstead College kiosk at the arena to meet representatives of the school’s international student body and learn about different cultures.
Haskell Free Library & Opera House Guided tours (at designated times) of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House – which opened in 1904 and features a theatre on the second floor that is renowned for its scenery, décor and superb acoustics – will be offered to visitors throughout the day.
Colby-Curtis Museum On September 17th, the Colby-Curtis museum will offer free tours to T-Day visitors. A select number of exhibitors – artisans and food vendors – will also be located on the site. In addition to this, T-Day visitors will be able to take a true historical tour of the town of Stanstead… with a horse and buggy ride! These rides will be available throughout the day, for a small fee.
GranitCentral Visitors who stop by Stanstead’s GranitCentral museum on T-Day will get a chance to learn more about the granite industry and take part in this year’s granite symposium.
Stone Circle Stanstead’s Stone Circle will feature different events throughout the day, including drumming sessions. Visitors who stay until the end of the day will have the opportunity to participate in a bonfire and a variety of other evening activities.
Le Vieux Forgeron Located behind Checkpoint Charlie Bistro Bar, Le Vieux Forgeron Art Gallery will feature the works of four eclectic Townships artists for visitors to enjoy. For more information about the exhibits, visit www.vieuxforgeron.com.
Also at the art gallery on T-Day, Dave McDonald – a local artisan blacksmith – will demonstrate his unique craft for visitors.
Townshippers’ Youth Council Finally, the Townshippers Youth Council members will offer a few fun activities for youth at this year’s T-Day. Throughout the morning, they will be organizing some interesting games for visitors, in the style of the popular ‘Minute-to-Win-It’ games seen on TV. For a small fee, participants will be invited to put their skills to the test while, at the same time, supporting Youth Council activities. In the afternoon, the Youth Council members will offer T-Day visitors the T-Day Improv Show… featuring council members and a few special guests. You definitely won’t want to miss it! Exact details for the youth activities will be available on the T-Day website in the coming days.
