Ayer’s Cliff to host Townshippers’ Day 2009

Sherbrooke, November 20, 2008. Ayer’s Cliff is to host Townshippers’ Day 2009 on September 18-19, announced Townshippers’ Association’s president, Michael van Lierop.

Townshippers’ Day 2009 marks both the 100th anniversary year of Ayer’s Cliff, and the 30th anniversary of Townshippers’ Association. Plans include a special anniversary event on Friday evening, followed by the Day itself on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the works for the occasion is the launch of a special 30th anniversary edition of Taproot: Poetry, Prose and Images from the Eastern Townships.

“This is a watershed year for Townshippers' Association. A full 30 years will have come and gone since the Association was first launched, and three decades later the Association is as vibrant - and relevant - as ever," commented van Lierop. "The evolution of Townshippers' Day is evidence of the vitality of our English-speaking minority community."

Chair of the new organizing committee, Dr. Mary Pearson, said, “We look forward to welcoming you all to Ayer’s Cliff on September 18th and 19th, to visit and enjoy the festivities.”

Dr. Pearson has begun recruiting her organizing committee. The first two members are Elaine Batrie as her co-chair and Patrick Proulx, Ayer’s Cliff town councilor.

Townshippers’ Day is a cultural festival and information fair which brings together English-speaking and French-speaking neighbours to celebrate the Eastern Townships’ rich heritage in a bilingual climate of mutual respect and friendship.

This is Townshippers’ Association’s 30th annual T-Day. Each year it is hosted by a different municipality or area. In 2008, it was hosted by Sutton. A list of all the T-Days Past can be found on www.tday.ca.
