Seeing Green: an Earth-friendly T-Day
Since 2006, when Townshippers’ Day was held on the Richmond Fairgrounds, T-Day committees have significantly reduced the amount of waste generated by the event – no small feat, considering between 8,000 and 10,000 people attend each year. Given the natural charm of the Eastern Townships, we owe a lot to our surroundings. This green event will go a long way to ensuring that the Townships stay beautiful for a long time to come. For the last five years, Townshippers’ Days have been committed to reducing the waste of this great festival. Not surprisingly, an event that attracts crowds from across the region to celebrate the Eastern Townships’ talents and tastes has the potential to leave behind a big mess! However, the ongoing commitment of Townshippers’ Association and the Townshippers’ Day Green team have been firmly committed to their goal of having a waste free celebration. Previous editions of T-Day have proved that with some minor commitment, a one-day attendance of 8 000-10 000 people can reduce their waste to leaving behind only one bag of trash. For Townshippers’ Day 2011, the Green Team and its army of volunteers will be once again dedicated to the preservation of the Eastern Townships’ natural beauty – just one of its many regional gifts that are celebrated annually at T-Day. As this year’s Green Team president, Jennifer Reinhold, stated “we are hoping to have absolutely no plastic water bottles on the site and instead a water source available on site. Visitors are also encouraged to bring re-usable bags to carry home purchases.” Like previous years, recycling posts will be visible and in a number of areas around the Townshippers’ Day site, while all food and drink will be served using compostable plates, cups and cutlery. By all doing our part, Townshippers’ Day can be a giant-size celebration leaving behind a tiny footprint in Stanstead.
DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES AND SHOPPING BAGS!! |
